What it is
Typewriter is a desktop app for writing in markdown. Open a folder — an Obsidian vault, a notes repo, a manuscript — and write. There is no account, no cloud and no lock-in: every document is a plain .md file you can open with any other app, forever.
- Writing first. A calm page with paper texture, focus mode and typewriter scrolling that keeps the line you're on in the middle of the screen.
- Plain files. Works directly on the folders you already have. Changes made by other apps show up instantly.
- Rich markdown. Tables, task lists, math, Mermaid diagrams and images, rendered as you type.
- Spelling and synonyms. Spellcheck and a thesaurus for English, Spanish and Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal).
- Typewriter sounds. Optional key, space and bell sounds, if you like the feel of a real machine.
- Private. No telemetry, no analytics, no tracking. Your writing never leaves your computer.
- Fast. Native app built on Rust. Opens in a blink, even with large folders.

Payments are processed by our reseller, who acts as the merchant of record and handles payment, invoicing and sales tax. Prices include VAT where applicable.
Refund policy
If Typewriter isn't for you, ask for a full refund within 14 days of purchase — no questions asked. Email us at typewriter.app@proton.me with your order number.
When a purchase is refunded, its license key is deactivated and no longer receives updates or support. This does not affect the rights the GPLv3 grants you over the copy of the software you received.
Privacy policy
The app
Typewriter collects no personal data. It sends no telemetry or analytics and never uploads your documents. It only connects to the internet to check for updates, to download spellcheck dictionaries when you install a language, and to activate your license key. Those requests contain no content from your files.
Purchases
Payments are handled by our reseller (merchant of record). They collect your name, email, billing country and payment details to process the order, under their own privacy policy. We receive your name, email and order details so we can deliver your license key, send updates about your purchase and answer support requests. We never sell or share this data.

This site uses no cookies, analytics or trackers.

Terms of sale
- Your purchase gives you a license key, the signed builds of Typewriter, updates and email support.
- The software itself is licensed under the GPLv3. Nothing in these terms limits the rights that license gives you.
- Typewriter is provided as is, without warranty of any kind, as stated in the GPLv3. Keep backups of your writing.
- Refunds follow the refund policy above.
- We may update these terms; changes never apply retroactively to past purchases.
